The Black Open-ended Box

The black open-ended box is created as a direct contrast to the walls experience, the viewer / participator moves from light space to dark space, white to black, outside to inside, exposed to protected.

A black felted timber bridge structure with open slatted lower third of the walls and floor reveals views of the exposed Lewissian rock strata below. It will reference the traditional building crafts of roof structures, house interiors or boat building, whilst the concrete and glass structures at either end of the wood become a link with modernity.

One should sense exposure, but also shelter and protection, warmth and comfort in this space. The familiar smell of wood, the construction of this space and the reverberating sound of wind and rain is intended to create a non-threatening space, which in essence seeks to protect the inhabitant.
